D. Reeves Productions helped to coordinate, decorate and set the tone of the opening night party for the Asian Film Festival, held at Lumi in Uptown. This was the 10th Anniversary of the festival and it was jam packed. We added screens which showed films from the festivals history, beautiful flowers and beautiful models to help add to the already electric atmosphere. Great music, great people , great opening night to an amazing film festival.

I was lucky enough to work backstage on BET’s Rip the Runway. The hosts were Selita Ebanks, a Victoria Secret model and Mehcad Brooks from True Blood. The Designers this year were Rachel Roy, Man vs Machine, Way it Should Be, Tennille White, Lila Nikole, LaQuan Smith. I worked on the opening and closing ceremony which had a carnival theme. Some amazing and fun costumes. The performers were Keri Hilson, New Boyz, Lloyd, Melanie Fiona, Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa, and Miguel. It was a huge production and can’t wait until next year to do it again. Take a look at some of my photos.

He looks much better in person and he’s a master with the press. His show was all about relaxation and beach life. Remix of “Here comes the Sun” reinforced the theme. I enjoyed it. Warm natural tones that reminded you of the sky, clouds, flowers, sand and grass; or khaki, white, peanut and shots of color. Sarongs, cashmere sweatshirts, long tank dresses, casual tunic dresses, canvas hats, large trench coats, slouchy pant suits, oversized beach bags made of croc, rugged sandals, cross shoulder messenger bags and strappy belts

Serena Williams, with Anna Wintour, Donald and MelaniaTrump, actress Rashida Jones from The Office

3.1 Phillip Lim Women’s Spring 2011 collection was at the Park Ave. Armory. Large oversized wooden architectural pieces covered the floor. Reflecting the designer’s concept for the clothes of, “All the pieces make a whole”. The line had silk bustier blouses, to lambskin halters, slouchy silk shorts, button up collars, camel back draped sweaters and tailor jacquard blazers. Colors were neutral with mixes of light blue with touches of some shimmer and texture, with leather paillettes and hand rhinestone embroidery.

The clothing had lots of layers and overlapping, with apron panel skirts and gowns, and sleeveless trenches. The line was complete with Lim’s bags, sunglasses, jewelry, booties, clogs, and sandals.

Celebs on the front row: MTV’s Alexa Chung, Kanye West in a hot pink jacket (not cute), and the gorgeous Tyson Beckford.

Anna Sui was an over crowded show. She went back to the American frontier with prairie fields in the background and a 60’s vibe to mix. Everything was very feminine, flirty, and soft with the usual mixes of prints and patterns. Lots of antique lace, chiffon and voile gliding down the runway. Baby doll dresses, hand-crocheted sweaters and shorts, cross-stitch embroidery, paisley print leggings, and fringe. Accessories included lots of boots and hand-made jewelry and feather headdresses which I didn’t really like; too literal.

Front Row: Photographer Bruce Weber, Kelly Osbourne, art director Fabien Baron, Creative Director of Barney’s Simon Doonan and interior designer Jonathan Adler

This season of fashion week was a quick one for me. My first day was Sept. 14 and in a span of two days, I saw 7 shows. Here are a few notes from day one.

Vera Wang’s Spring 2011 Collection was inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” with a mix of East meets West, sophistication and romance. She had body hugging sheath dresses with Japanese floral prints. One of my favorite dresses was a charcoal and black strapless sheath with a one-shoulder sheer organza cowl. Romantic kimono blouses, ruched silk tulle dresses in eye-popping color graced the runway along with masculine silhouettes in lots of black. Black jersey sleeveless jumpsuits with a quilted harness and zippers, and another great look was the black silk wool cutaway motorcycle jacket with zipper detail, black and silver sequin tee with black wool pinstripe asymmetrically draped short. The hot accessories were black and gray booties with black sequin on the heel and the chunky crystal necklaces.

Celebrities seen were: Andre Leon Talley and Anna Wintour of Vogue with her signature sun shades, Stephanie Pratt, Zac Posen, Serena Williams

Herve Leger was my favorite show of the season. I was lucky to get backstage access and see the clothes up close. His interpretation of a modern-day Marie Antoinette was refreshingly new. Corsetry, lace like printed leather, woven bandages, sleek boning, delicate lace and lingerie accents. Amazing. Colors were calming: peach, blush, neutrals with touches of black. So many things I loved but my favorite was the lace like perforated leather; beautiful.

Celebrities spotted: Jessica Szohr from Gossip Girl, actress Melissa George, model Maggie Rizer.

Dennis Basso show was an important one for me. I negotiated for Global Fashion News to be the house camera crew for his show, so I was busy. Back to the clothes; Cocktails anyone? If you have a cocktail party to go to, this is the designer for you. All dresses no pants this season. Many of the dresses were full at the bottom, some with cut outs or oversized ruffles. His line is always very luxurious and this season did not disappoint, with silk, taffeta, chiffon paired with lux metallic, paillettes embroidery, hand printed silk, snakeskin clutches and alligator dresses and vests. Yes there is fur for spring, from pink mink jackets, to a mint color chinchilla and net duster.

Stars on the front row: Hoda Kotb from the Today Show, model Carol Alt, Sports Illustrated model Hilary Rhoda.

G Star was my last show of the night. It was at Pier 94. A huge venue which can allow you the freedom to build a great set. Backstage was a sea of clothes; 60 looks and a lot of extras. This Amsterdam denim label never disappoints. The inspiration was the desert, so the colors were sand, white and blue. Amazing denim washes, oversized pockets, asymmetrical cuts; just cool comfortable clothing. A mixture of modern structure and flow. Items had lots of straps and clever closures. They brought newness to all the outerwear and reinvented many denim pieces.

Hi everyone,

I had a chance to work for Reach Media, which is Tom Joyner’s company. I was asked to consult on his big Family Reunion event, which happens every year in Orlando Florida. It usually has about 14, 000 of his loyal fans who attend to hear panel discussions, see concerts, visit various theme parks and shop at the big business expo. I was asked to be a consultant on their fashion show, which happened on the last day.

My first comment about the whole experience was is, what a well-oiled machine Mr. Joyner has in place. Every detail was taken care of from the time you checked in and his logo was placed on all the door key cards. During the day there was plenty entertainment for all ages and at night there was all kinds of entertainment from concerts to comedians and care for the children so the parents could get their grove on.

I saw Tito Jackson and he was fabulous. YES, Tito and he played Blues. He said he’s always loved it and his father Joe Jackson wouldn’t let him play and his brothers were never interested in it. He was great, but when he did a tribute of songs to his brother Michael, the house was rocking. You know you’re jamming when the woman who signs for the deaf is moving and the security guards are dancing. The Jackson family have such a large library of music. Good Stuff.

The next night I saw Fantasia, one of the winners of American Idol. She is serious about her craft. She took off her shoes, showed her spanx and sweated none stop. She reminded me of Patti LaBelle.

One of the best concerts of the weekend was an Old School Rap concert, with Moni Love, Arrested Development, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, Kid and Play, and Chubb Rock. All I have to say is the original lovers of rap had a funky fresh time.

There were so many other entertainers, Ohio Players, El Debarge etc. and so on, but if you go to familyreunion.blackamericaweb.com and you can see photo’s and the whole line up. See you there next year.
